Friday in Emerald Isle
Today was an all day beach day. David and his dad took the kids out and everyone stayed out all day! I took lunch out to everyone around 1:30 and watched as they swam and caught fish.
They all* enjoyed fishing with their dad and caught a bunch of fish, some of them keepers, and an orange bandanna!
Will, Morgan and Katherine all love to surf fish. *Caroline will have none of it. She never has thought much of the sport, much like me at her age. I used to go fly fishing with my grandfather, but my favorite part was when he'd let me take over the controls of the motor. That's when the fun began. I'd chase the ducks that were lazily resting on the pond. Somehow, I think Caroline would derive the same measure of delight from chasing ducks.
Now, I didn't much care for the fishing but I loved watching him tie his flies. He'd constructed a contraption to help him hold the hooks while he designed fly after fly, wrapping thread and feathers to create flies that would make the fish think they were going after local insects. That's a lot of work to go through when you know you're going to throw the fish back anyway!
In the end our fisherpeople brought back 5 fish - the keepers. There another 1/2 dozen or so that were just too small to keep. David remembered Grandmama's rule and cleaned the fish before bringing them into the house. She fried them up and added them to the choices for dinner. She and Morgan and David were the only takers!
The puzzle that we gave to David's parents on Monday managed to stay wrapped in cellophane until this morning. Grandmama made the mistake (?) of opening it at breakfast. Soon after Granddaddy and I took over. I stayed and in as long as I could to work on it. We worked on it until minutes before dinner was served, and then again immediately afterwards. Caroline joined the fun and the three of us worked together all night...even to the exclusion of Boggle and Scrabble! 1000 pieces later, it's complete!
