Groovy Sprouts - Third Year - Regionals

The Groovy Sprouts have had a bumpy year. First semester the girls and boy spent most of their time arguing about...well...just about everything. I guess that's what happens when you get 7 strong-willed and bright middle schoolers together and ask them to come up with an idea. Then one of their long-term members quit. Just as they'd gotten their challenge idea together, they had to reconfigure. Then came the snow...and a lot of missed practices.

They went into Regionals hoping to have fun.

Their outfits were cute. They did well.

In fact, they won!

Pinewood Derby 2010

Pack 141 held its annual Pinewood Derby this evening. There were about 50 cars entered, and each one raced at least three times. The boys, cut, sanded & painted their own cars. it was neat to see all the different cars, and fun to watch the boys' faces when the cars were racing down the track!

When he first arrived, Will stood in line with the other boys to register his car. The scoutmasters measured it, weighed it, and made sure it met the required specifications. We had a little hiccup when his wheels were not far enough apart. A few tools and some wonder glue later "Lightning Bolt" was ready to race!!

Will's friend Tyler's car did really well!

Here's Lightning Bolt coming down the track - it tended to start out a bit slower and get faster as it neared the finish line. It came in 2nd and 3rd in all of its heats.

David got to start the races!
Already they're planning for next year!

PACEM 2010 - cont

PACEM will continue to be at our church through February 13. This week we only went on the days I was scheduled to be in charge.
Every night after dinner is cleaned up and the men have gotten settled into their evening routine, we put snacks out. This night, Will decided he would bring the snacks to the men. They seemed to appreciate his efforts and welcomed his snacks as they played cards, or monopoly, or watched movies.
Kathy & Barry dished a lot of ice cream over these two weeks. It's a favorite, and the men are comfortable enough to ask for it if we don't already have it out.

Jubilate came down and gave a concert of some of their spring tour pieces. The music was wonderful & the men seemed to enjoy it too!

Super Bowl 2010

Once we made it home from town, determined that our home and pets were in good condition, and shoveled a bit more (a job that might never end!), we all decided we'd better get to the annual Mundell Super Bowl Party! After all, if there was a party, we would be there.

We all piled into the Jeep and bumped our way into town. Making it down the icy hill to the party was a bit scary, but we did it. There were not as many people at the party as in years past. Only a few made it, and they had to park in a cleared lot and be shuttled in by our host.

The food was good & the game was fine. So fine! What made the evening though, was the awesome sledding afterwards!! The hill was steep and icy, the sleds were rickety enough to make you fear for your life, and the laughter was plentiful. Sparks flew!!

The Kittie Colvin Trail Circle made dinner for the men tonight. Four women used the same chicken recipe, but came up with very different looking pans of chicken. It didn't matter at all and the men loved it! I brought rolls - how easy was that?!

Tonight the YOUTH were in charge of serving dinner and activities with the men.

Thursday, February 4, 2010
Kathy and I are the "In Charge" people on Tuesdays and Thursdays this year. This means the kids get to come and help out while we make sure everything goes smoothly. Tonight they got to help serve dinner!

When we heard that there was going to be more snow coming our way, the kids and I decided to make weekend reservations at the hotel right next to our church. We needed to be close by in case others couldn't make it in to cook, and clean, and help our guests. By the time we got ourselves moving and got to the hotel Friday afternoon, the snow was not fun to be in. It was windy and the snow w stung our faces. My plans for cool trek on grounds were dashed. Instead the kids watch TV, David shoveled the church sidewalks before heading home, and Morgan worked on a history paper. Then it was time to "feed the mans."

We woke up this morning, not as early as planned, but in happy spirits.

Saturday, February 6, 2010
We headed over to church to eat some of Robby & Larry's pancakes & sausage! On our way we saw snow-covered bikes!
A snow-covered playground... what you can't see are the bushes on the street side that have all been crushed down by the snow!
After eating, cleaning, and chatting with the men we headed back to the hotel room for some quiet time. We played along the way!

Soon it was time to go back to help make dinner! Tonight it is our Bible Study class's turn to make dinner.

We passed by the bikes again..

After dinner and activities, we headed back to the hotel for the night. The snow was beautiful!

We had to watch out for falling snow though!!

Sunday, February 7, 2010
Sunday morning there were more pancakes & sausage for breakfast!! Will continued to read while K continued to clean. The men were all gone by 10:00 which gave us plenty of time to check out of the hotel!

Now we're homeward bound.
